Head, Jaw & Neck Therapy
for TMJ Dysfunction and Tension Pain
in Bracknell, Farnham and surrounding towns
Clinical hands-on therapy for pain and dysfunction surrounding the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ).
A targeted Soft Tissue Therapy treatment focusing on the jaw, temples, neck and shoulders - designed specifically to support clients experiencing TMJ dysfunction, teeth grinding, tension headaches, facial tightness or postural stress.
You might recognise some of this. A jaw that clicks or catches when you open wide, or feels stiff and sore first thing after a night of clenching. Tension headaches that settle around the temples or behind the eyes. An ache that travels from the jaw into the ear, the neck or the base of the skull. Teeth grinding you only found out about because your dentist pointed to the wear, or your partner mentioned the noise. What these tend to share is muscles around the jaw and neck working far harder than they were ever meant to, and that is exactly what hands-on treatment can reach.
I combine:
Myofascial and soft tissue work
Gentle STR
MET techniques to redress function and balance within the jaw muscles
Subtle positional release
Precise massage techniques to calm the nervous system and reduce muscle guarding
Clients often report reduced jaw clicking, softer facial tension, improved sleep and a deep sense of relief.
A session runs for two hours, which gives us the time to look at the whole picture rather than the jaw on its own. I'll ask about your history, your sleep, your stress and anything your dentist or GP has flagged, then assess how your jaw moves and where it is holding. Much of the work is external, around the temples, cheeks, jaw, neck and shoulders. Where it helps, and only ever with your consent, I also work intraorally, with a gloved hand inside the mouth. Some of the muscles that drive TMJ pain sit deep behind the jaw and simply cannot be reached any other way. I explain everything before I do it, it stays gentle throughout, and you can stop at any point. The jaw responds far better to slow, precise work than to pressure, and nothing happens without your say-so.

Soft tissue therapy can't change the joint itself, but a lot of TMJ discomfort comes from the surrounding muscles being overworked and guarded. Releasing that tension is often where people feel the difference.

Yes. I work the jaw, temple and neck muscles that clenching overloads, and many clients find their morning jaw soreness starts to ease.

An excellent question, but one that is genuinely tricky to answer conclusively. Because every person is unique, your history, and experience of symptoms will be unique to you, the cause of the symptoms will be unique to you, and how your tissues respond to the treatment and techniques will be unique to you. So, I won't ever make a promise on number of sessions.
However, what I can say is that usually when a client first comes to me with TMJ, symptoms are often acute, or in a flare up, or they have been dealing with TMJ related symptoms for a long time. Whether you’re in a flare up, or whether things are chronic, step 1 is to settle things down and get symptoms under control. In general, this is best achieved by having regular sessions a week or so apart for 3-4 weeks. By this time, we most likely will have a good idea of causes and contributing factors, what techniques are helping the most, what adjustments you can make yourself to support ongoing predict that before your body has had a chance to respond. We start with your first session, see how things settle, and decide together from there. -
Some specific techniques can feel intense in sensitive areas, but the aim isn’t to cause pain. Soft tissue work can be tender, particularly the myofascial release, and there can be a certain intensity as a tight muscle lets go. But discomfort is never the aim, and it isn't something you have to brace against or push through. I ease into everything and check in as we go, and I can change the depth and pace at any point so we stay within a range that feels right for you. I'll never work beyond what's clinically appropriate, and we can keep the entire treatment more gentle and soothing if that's what you need.

Clenching, stress & the nervous system: when tension becomes pain
I'm a mobile therapist, so I come to you. I treat clients in their own homes across Bracknell, Wokingham, Crowthorne, Sandhurst, Binfield, Warfield, Ascot, as well as Farnham and the surrounding villages.
For jaw and neck work this matters more than it sounds. You can move straight from the table to rest rather than driving home with a freshly released jaw and a windscreen full of traffic, which is so often when the tension starts to creep back in.
